給L的一封信

Dear L,
剛從北京回到臺北。我總算見到了王希孟的〈千里江山圖〉。是的，他就是我在你面前提過很多次的那位年輕畫家。但我不想向你描述〈千里江山圖〉畫得如何，因為，我知道聰明如你，你會喜歡自己體會，若透過了我，你只能聽到我的體驗。
但我也知道，你當然願意聽我說。然後，就像討論一部我們各自看過的電影般，我們會各自舉出各自的觀察，有時同意對方，有時堅持立場。藉著這些言詞的往來，我總能得到比自己單獨看電影還有趣的想法。我一直很感謝你願意傾聽、願意分享的溫暖心意。
然而這次，我卻做了一件冷酷的事。我在〈千里江山圖〉前，結結實實地傷害了一位青年人。
那天，我趁著人少，已經用短焦鏡看了大半段的〈千里江山圖〉，正要從第三段水域進入一段平緩林地。一位青年人湊到我的身邊，很興奮地說：「這畫裡真多人物，畫得真好，是吧！」我側了臉，向他禮貌地點了頭。接著，他又說：「你看到了橋上的人沒？」我又微笑禮貌回應著，說：「是。」他一手拿筆、一手拿著一本筆記簿，說：「我都做了筆記，你要不要聽聽看。我發現這裡有兩組人，來來，你來看看。」我其實感受到了他的熱切，但卻迅速地轉以冷漠，說了「謝謝，不用。」就故意掉頭走向楊無咎的〈四時梅花〉。
拒絕的原因很難說清楚。我想，有一部分是因為我很焦慮，我還沒掌握好對〈千里江山圖〉的觀察。再者，千里而來，我可不想聽這位看起來並不像專家（我其實不確定他到底是不是專家，完全只是因他看起來年輕）的隨意觀察心得。
當時，我忘記了你對我的溫暖。對你而言，我雖不算青年，但同樣稱不上專家。不過我知道，你會理解我這一部份的魯莽。
但你不會同意的是，我竟然表現出一種自以為擁有對作品「獨一詮釋權」的傲慢。「拒絕分享」、「故作姿態」就是這種傲慢的一體兩面，我用這樣的傲慢傷害了一位青年人。
這就像我們都不喜歡的學術習氣，一味捍衛自己的「發現」，卻忘了原來就是為傳佈「發現」而作研究的初衷。
我為了見王希孟，不辭千里。卻因為傲慢，拒人千里。〈千里江山圖〉畫中真意，我能掌握幾分？知識的真境，我又能走到幾層？

Health and Medicine at Sea, 1700-1900

Health and Medicine at Sea, 1700-1900 Maritime medicine, together with its links to the development of empire, is a burgeoning area of historical interest and enquiry.This book, based on extensive original research, explores the history of health and medicine in maritime and imperial contexts in a key period, reflecting the growing professionalization of medicine at sea from the establishment of the Sick and Hurt Board to the end of the Victorian era.The chapters, written by leading experts in the field, are grouped around two central themes: Royal Naval medical policy, administration and practice; and health and mortality relating to the migration of peoples across the globe, including slavery, emigration and indentured migration.The book will be of interest to a wide range of historians, particularly those working in the fields of maritime history, the history of medicine, and the history of colonialism and imperialism. David Boyd Haycock was Curator of Seventeenth-Century Imperial and Maritime History at the National Maritime Museum, 2007-09, and has held research fellowships at the University of Oxford, the University of California, Los Angeles and the London School of Economcs. He is author of William Stukeley: Science, Religion and Archaeology in Eighteenth Century England, which is published by Boydell and Brewer. Sally Archer is at the National Maritime Museum.
